About our undergraduate program:

Can I double major?
Yes, you most certainly can. In fact a significant proportion of our undergraduate opt to double major. For more details on how to do this please consult the Undergraduate Catalog.

Does the Sociology Program offer internships or Independent Studies?
Yes. The Department as well as individual faculty members maintain close relationship s with many community partners. Students majoring in Sociology are able to work as interns in many of these agencies and companies and receive credit toward their degree. To find out more about internship possibilities contact the department and ask to speak with the internship coordinator.

Our faculty are also actively involved in research. This gives undergraduate students who are interested in hands-on-research the opportunity to be involved in on-going projects. In addition, many faculty work with students to design their own research projects. Undergraduate students have presented their research at regional professional meetings and UCF's annual Showcase of Undergraduate research. Sociology students have also published in UCF's electronic Undergraduate Research Journal. To find out more about research opportunities contact any faculty member in the department.

Who is my adviser?
All Sociology majors are assigned a faculty adviser. If you do no know who your adviser is just call the department (407-823-2227) and ask for the name of the faculty member assigned to you.

What is the Sociology Exit Exam?
All Sociology majors must take this multiple choice exam at the end of their last semester at UCF in order to graduate. We use this exam as part of our annual assessment of the Sociology program.

Does Sociology require a foreign language?
All Bachelor of Arts programs at UCF require 2 semesters of language proficiency. In addition to that University requirement, Sociology majors must take an enhancement course. This may either be a third semester of a language or one of the approved enhancement courses. As list of all approved courses is available in the Sociology Office (PH 403).

Do you offer the Sociology major at any regional campuses?
Yes. We offer the complete major (and minor) at the Cocoa campus. We have some course offerings at the Daytona Campus as well and are working to expand our Daytona campus offerings.

Do I need to make sure that my contact information is updated with UCF?
YES! This is the primary source of information that we use to contact you regarding program requirements, course changes, etc. Please make sure that the email, mail and phone addresses that UCF has for you are current. We wouldn't want you to miss out on any important information about our program.



About our graduate program:

How do I apply to the Sociology MA or Ph.D. program?
Applications are online and can be found on the Graduate Studies website. Please consult the graduate catalog for specific admission requirements and deadlines.

Do I need to take the GRE?
Yes. In order to have a complete application on file with UCF you must take the GRE. You should also allow for enough time for your scores to get from Educational Testing Services to us.

What is the difference between the thesis and non-thesis option for the MA degree?
Our MA degree is 30 hours regardless of whether or not you complete a thesis. If you chose to complete a thesis, you will use 6 of the 30 hours to conduct the research for your thesis, if you choose the non-thesis option you will take elective coursework for those 6 hours and need to pass a comprehensive exam. The other difference is that with the non-thesis track there is an additional required core course, bringing the total to five.

Do you have funding available for graduate students?
Yes, the department has some funding in the form of Graduate Assistantships for both MA and PhD students. Master's students who receive assistantships work as either a teaching or research assistant for Sociology faculty. Ph.D. students on assistantships may assist faculty and may also teach their own course. If you are interested in an assistantship, your completed application must be received by the priority deadline. Students may also be eligible for college and university fellowships. Please contact the graduate director for more information on this type of funding.

How do I register for courses?
Once you have been admitted to the program you will be able to access the MyUCF website. You can search for courses for our department by selecting the Department of Sociology & Anthropology and then graduate courses. Please note that because there are two disciplines in our department Anthropology graduate courses will also show up here. Registration for courses is all online through this portal.

What are the areas of concentration in which I can study if I choose to attend the UCF Sociology doctoral program?
Our PhD program has 4 main areas of concentration: crim/deviance, domestic violence, inequalities, and urban/environment. There are a number of courses that you can select from in each of these areas so that you may tailor your educational experience.

Can I participate in a research practicum?
Yes - Our program has an applied focus and we encourage you to use the methodological skills you will learn out in the Central Florida Community. We have many contacts with agencies such as domestic violence and homeless shelters.

How many faculty participate in the graduate program.
here are currently 18 Sociology faculty in our department and active in the graduate program. You can visit our web page to see a description of some of their areas of interest.

Do you offer any graduate degrees at the regional campuses?
Yes. We offer the MA in Applied Sociology at the Cocoa campus as well as the Orlando campus.



About Orlando and UCF:

Do you need a car to get around Orlando?
Yes. Orlando is a sprawling metropolitan area. Although it has a public transportation system (The Lynx bus system), having a car is preferable.

How large is UCF?
We are growing rapidly and the 2004 headcount for the university was slightly over 40,000 students.

What is it like living right next door to Disneyworld?
Well, actually Disney is about 45 minutes on the opposite corner of the city of Orlando. It is far enough away to ignore it if you want to but at the same time close enough to visit if you're a fan of Mickey.

What is the weather like in Orlando?
Orlando has a very temperate climate. In the summer the temperature can hover around 90 degrees in the middle of the afternoon, but just about everyday there is a nice refreshing rain that cools down the temperature to a pleasant 70 degrees. In the winter, sunny days and 70 degree temperatures are the norm.
