Dr. Carter is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Florida in 2004. Her areas of interest include sociological theory, reproduction and childbearing, gender and race inequality and sociology of education. She is currently working on a project that analyzes women's accounts of negotiating gender performances during labor and birth in out-of-hospital settings. She has an article forthcoming in NWSA journal that draws upon Marx, Hegel and O'Brien to analyze gender differences in childbearing experiences and resulting reproductive consciousness. Other recent publications investigate changes in gender role attitudes over time (with Mamadi Corra and J. Scott Carter) and college students' perceptions of feminism (with J. Scott Carter).
